Three Ways to Acquire New Cards

When you’re looking to add to your Collection, there are three main routes you can take. Each has its own level of risk, reward, and excitement:

  • Ripping Packs and Boxes: The classic experience. Whether it’s a Retail Pack or a Premium Hobby Box, you’re the first to see the cards. It’s pure luck, but it’s the only way to feel the rush of pulling a Monster Hit yourself.

  • Buying Singles: The tactical approach. You hit the Marketplace and buy the exact card you want. No gambling, no “filler”—just the Target Player at a fixed price. This is the best way to build with precision.

  • Joining Football Breaks: A community event where a Breaker opens High-End Boxes live on stream. You buy a “Spot” (usually a specific team). If they pull a card for your team, it’s yours! It’s more affordable than buying a whole box and brings a massive social buzz to the Hobby.

Choosing your collecting style is much like a manager picking a formation before a big European night—it dictates your strategy and determines exactly how your final “squad” will look in your gallery. Whether you’re driven by the nostalgia of completing a full sticker album, a lifelong loyalty to your local club, or the thrill of scouting the next global superstar before they hit the big leagues, the hobby offers a path for every type of supporter.

Below are the three most popular ways to focus your collection, helping you move beyond just “owning cards” and toward curating a truly elite personal archive.

Method 1: Collecting Sets

For many, the ultimate satisfaction comes from completing a full Set. It turns the Hobby into a puzzle where every piece matters.

  • The Base Set: Aim to find every standard card in a release (e.g., cards 1 through 200). It’s a brilliant, low-cost way to learn the league.

  • Inserts and Themed Sets: Focus on the “mini-sets” within a release, like Goal Machines or Clean Sheets subsets.

  • Numbered and Auto Sets: A massive challenge where you try to hunt down every Autograph or Numbered Parallel from a specific release. This is for the dedicated collector looking for an elite finished product.

Method 2: Collecting Teams

If you already have a club you support, Team Collecting is the most natural way to start. Football Breaks are perfect for this—simply “buy the Spurs spot” or the “Real Madrid spot” and keep every card pulled for that club.

  • The Full Squad: Aim to collect a card of every player currently in the first-team squad.

  • Team Autos & Relics: Focus on finding Signed Cards or Shirt Patches (Memorabilia) for your club’s legends and current stars.

  • The Parallel Mix: Collect every version of your team’s cards across different sets—from the basic Paper versions to the high-end Refractors.

Method 3: Collecting Players

Player collecting allows you to follow the career of a specific athlete from their Debut to retirement.

  • The Rainbow Chase: This is the ultimate player-collector goal. You try to collect every single colour variation (Parallel) of a specific player’s card within one set. Snagging the BaseSilverGold, and the 1/1 Black is what we call “Completing the Rainbow.”

  • The Variation Hunt: Many cards have Image Variations (short prints) featuring different photos. Finding every version is a true test for a specialist.

  • The Rookie Journey: Focus solely on a player’s Rookie Cards (RC). Many collectors use Breakers to target “Player Spots” for the newest Wonderkids to try and hit their first big On-Card Autographs.
